Upcoming Release: Shape Collage Version 1.1
I’m out of town right now, but when I get back and do some testing, I will be releasing the next version of Shape Collage. This version has a bunch of nice new features, like using drag-and-drop to add photos to the collage, being able to change the background colour of the collage or use a photo as the background, and an option to change the colour of the photo border. There are also some performance improvements and some bug fixes to go along with the new version. If you have any comments, suggestions, or bugs to report, I am happy to hear them (email or leave a comment). Look for the new version by the end of the month!

I’m interested in doing extremely large collages (gigapixel). Do you have any idea of the largest size this can handle? On my PC with 2GB of RAM (65% free), it won’t create 16k x 12k, even though I have enough RAM available. I see the RAM usage of javaw.exe go up to roughly 1,000,000,000 bytes, and I still have 20% free. If I boosted my system to 4 GB of RAM, would that help? limitations of Java?

The next version of Shape Collage (still soon to be released) will allow you to create extremely large collages of the size you are interested in.

thanks for your work! is posible to change the frame of the photo with a real polaroid image or a custom frame?

At the moment, you can’t change the border of the photos. The next release will include the ability to change the colour of the border, but no further customization. I will look into adding this functionality in a future release.

great work man ! your soft is really usefull and so simple ! i’ve been looking for some time for such a tool. I would love to do the same in c#, not a jawa fan inside
Thanks !!

What would the point be in rewriting the software in C#? At least in my comparisons, there is no, or virtually no, speed improvement in C# over Java, and worse, a C# implementation would not be as portable as the current Java implementation, which works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Awesome software- I was looking for easily automatically created collages and this fits the bill! Thank you…
Quick q- What size should I make the Collage so that it prints out perfectly on 4×6 or 8×10?
Thanks
Mike

It depends on the quality that you want to print and the dpi of your printer. I found this webpage that explains things pretty nicely:
http://www.photoshopessentials.com/essentials/image-quality.php
As a rough estimate, for 4″x6″, try a collage size of 1200×1800 pixels and set the photo size to “Auto”. For 8″x10″, try a collage size of 2400×3000 pixels.

Very nice piece of software!
When do you expect version 1.1 to be released?

Fantastic idea & producing default size collages as JPGs works great.
If I increase the image size above 1500×1500 or change to PSD it crashes on my Mac. I’ve tried a 3000×3000 using Vista & 8 hours later (only 170 photos) it produced a 2.35Gb corrupt PSD file.
Please, please, please release the promised new version & if I can get it to work I WILL make a donation.
Thanks,
Jim

The new release is coming. I keep adding new features and improvements to the new version, which keeps pushing back the release date. My research project has also been taking up a lot of my time recently. I’m not sure when the new version will be released. I think I’ve finally finalized the features for the release, so I just need to set aside a solid day or two of testing to get it ready.
Besides what I’ve mentioned in the post, the new features are numerous ranging from options to change the font, improved layout algorithm, multi-threaded for increased speed, reduced memory footprint to allow for really large collages, and an improved interface. There’s also a bunch of fixes, including poor performance with photos with certain colour profiles and a bug with writing to PSD files.
The new version should be able to handle the collage sizes that you are trying to create and the new version creates collages in just seconds for the most part, and just minutes for even sizes that you’re trying to create. The size of the collage that you’re trying to make is rather excessive though. With 170 photos, each at 3000×3000 pixels, the collage is almost 30,000×30,000 pixels, which even at 300dpi would end up being over 8×8 feet if you printed it out!

Thanks for the response. I guess I’m doing something wrong regarding my final output size. I thought I was setting the Collage size to 3000×3000px & not each photo. I am trying to create a collage that wil print to 13″x11″ @ 300 dpi.
I’ll keep playing with it & look forward to the new release.
Thanks again,
Jim

Just set the collage size to be 3900×3300 pixels then and set the photo size to be “Auto”. The reason that your PSD was “corrupt” was that Photoshop and Gimp can’t handle files larger than 2GB.

Just been thinking about the new release – can I offer to do some testing for you?

How neat…
I’m brand new at this and still trying to figure things out. Will you be able to print 11×14 or 16×20 or even a poster? If so, will there be instructions/details as to how to do this?
Once again…thanks…this is cool.
November 12th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Yes, you can definitely create a collage that will print well on 11×14 or 16×20. The rule of thumb is to multiply the dimensions (assuming inches) by 300.
11″x14″ = 3300×4200 pixels
16″x20″ = 4800×6000 pixels
November 12th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
What do I do after the collage has been created? How do I save it? How do I know what size I can make from this? Sorry, still learning.
November 12th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
On the new version, will I be able to make some photos a different size than the others? Such as to highlight some photos?
Thanks.

When you click “Create”, the program asks you what to save the collage as. Then, you have to print it using some photo viewing program on your computer, like the default Windows photo viewer program, Picasa, Photoshop, etc.
You have to create a collage with a minimum number of pixels for it to print well and then you specify in whatever program you use to print, what size to print the collage.
If you want to manually change the size of some of the photos, save the collage as a PSD and manually edit it in Photoshop yourself.
