Shape Collage 2.1

Shape Collage 2.1 has been released!

There’s a couple new features in this release, some performance tweaks, and some bug fixes. One really cool new feature is the ability to add photos from the web to use in collages! Just select “Add photos from web” in the File menu or by right-clicking the photo box and then enter a webpage that has pictures and Shape Collage will automatically download the pictures from that page for the collage! It works for any webpage that has pictures in it, like Flickr, Picasa Web Albums, Google Image Search, YouTube, CNN,, The Huffington Post,, or xkcd. This works surprisingly well and fast (thanks to some tricks that I used).

Note that it will only grab the photos on the page that you give it. In fact, it will try to grab every image on the webpage that you give it, so you will usually have to remove some of the irrelevant ones. Shape Collage will not crawl websites looking for photos. This feature also doesn’t work for sites that require you to login, so you are out of luck if you want to use this with Facebook. Maybe try this instead for Facebook.

As before, Shape Collage automatically creates beautiful looking photo collages in any shape you want with just a few mouse clicks in under a minute and is free for personal use!

These are the big highlights in this release:

  • Use photos from the web
    • Just enter the link to a webpage with photos to use them in a collage
  • More customization
    • Adjust the photo rotations by setting the range of allowable rotations
    • Adjust the direction of the drop shadows and optionally, remove the shadow
  • Faster
    • More multithreading for increased speed
    • More responsive when adding a large number of photos to the photo box
  • Better stability
    • Error checking for images that cannot be read properly
    • Miscellaneous bug fixes

    Hey Vincent,

your tool is just great, I was looking for something pretty much like that.
Fast, easy to use, and exact …

Maybe it is an option to enable word-wrap for the free text option, because two lines would make a wallpaper look more dense and more interesting.

Anywho, it rocks … thank you very much!
    All the best from germany!

I really love the Shape Collage software and have been challenged by poor resolution of the final product. Is there a way to increase the size/resolution of the file as its being formed so that it will make a nice looking poster (32×22)…couldnt figure out how to do that from the menus provided.
The source JPEG files are all high quality, but they become choppy as part of the collage (47 photos on 32×22 poster). Thanks in advance for your advice.

  8. Vincent Cheung Says:

If you know how big you want to print it out, simply specify that as the collage size. Click the “Auto” button next to the “Collage Size” so that you can adjust the collage size manually, and then select “inches” and enter 32″x22″ and it’ll automatically create a collage with a high enough resolution to print out nicely for that size. This assumes 300 pixels/inch.

If you want to tweak it manually, simply enter in the dimensions of the collage in pixels.

ok .. forgive the newbie.. I am at a loss.. I can’t for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong.. I can’t get my collage to print.. I keep getting directed to another site (shutterfly) .. am I supposed to do something else.. sorry .. I guess I should know all this .. but.. I love the idea.. but im at a loss.. HELLPPPP

  10. Vincent Cheung Says:

If you want to print the collage online, you can sign up at that site (Shutterfly) and order a print. If you want to print the collage on your own printer, then open up the collage file on your computer using your image viewer/editor of choice and then using that program to print to your printer. Shape collage currently has no functionality to print to your own printer.

Is there any way to make the selected photos borderless? Use the prog frequently and appreciate your making it available.

  12. Vincent Cheung Says:

I’m glad that you like Shape Collage!

To create a collage where the photos have no border using Shape Collage 2.1, go to the “Appearance” tab and set the size for the border to be 0%.

Fantastic application! I love it for scrapping the gazillion photos I have of family. I’m 70 years old and this app has been an answer to my prayers.

    THank you so much. :)

  16. Patton Says:

    Hi Vincent,

    great work.

But I have a problem with portrait pictures (rotated using IrfanView). Many of them appear as landscape (which does no other program).
How do you decide, which orientation to choose? Can I influence it, without using the right-click option (no fun with >100 pictures)?

    Greeting from Germany,

  17. Vincent Cheung Says:

Shape Collage has two ways of orienting the images. The first is the way that the image is written to the file and the second is the orientation flag in the EXIF meta information stored with JPEGs. Most image editing programs will just rewrite the image data when rotating pictures so that things are oriented properly. Cameras usually use the orientation flag to tell you which way is up. I’m not sure how IrfanView rotates the pictures, but if you email me an example or two, then I can look at it more closely.

You can select multiple images in Shape Collage to rotate using the right-click menu. Just click the first photo, hold Shift, and click the last photo to select a range, or hold CTRL and click the ones you want. Then you can use the right-click menu to rotate all the photos in one go.

  18. Max Says:

Upgraded to 2.5 – now unable to open Shape Collage! “An error occurred while starting the application” No longer have 2.1 available on your site – I want to go back! Otherwise love this program.

    Please fix bug.

  19. Vincent Cheung Says:

That bug should now be fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience and sorry for the slow response (I am currently out of town).

  20. Alan Says:

We just upgraded and I bought the pro version. Same problem as others. Old version is gone, and we cannot get the new one to start. We get the shapecollage splash screen for 30 secs, then the error message. Running Win XP on quadcore with 4 gb ram. Need to sort this out real quick as we have a customer order waiting. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling – no good. Have tried manually deleting and reinstalling – no good.

  21. Vincent Cheung Says:

I have updated the installation file since you downloaded it and it should fix your problem. Please download it again and let me know if it works.

  22. Mike Says:

Have tried about half a dozen times to get the program to run, no joy whatsoever.
It’s installing OK but will not load up.
Have uninstalled and tried again all to no avail.
    HELP !

  23. Paula Says:

    Hi Vincent,

Great work – love the program.

This might be a really dumb question but is there anyway you can make all the pictures in the collage face the right way up. I’ve tried numerous times but 80% of my pictures are upside down. Has this got something to do with the rotation? If so how can I fix. Please advise.

  24. Vincent Cheung Says:

If the pictures are upside down, then it probably has to do with the rotation information stored in the photo file (some cameras may record the rotation information incorrectly). You can correct this by selecting the photos that are upside down in the Photo drawer on the left, right-clicking, and choosing to rotate left or right. You can also do a global change by going to the “Advanced” tab and changing the average angle of rotation, i.e. 180 degrees to flip it upside down (or right side up in your case).

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement? My website has a lot of unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any techniques to help reduce content from being stolen? I’d really appreciate it.
